ESMVC Project Empowers Farmers in Chegu with Climate-Smart Agriculture and Agribusiness Training

Chegu, Mion District, Ghana – June 12, 2026

The Enhancing Sustainability of the Maize Value Chain (ESMVC) Project continues to strengthen agricultural resilience and economic opportunities for farmers across Northern Ghana through targeted capacity-building initiatives.

On 12th June 2026, the ESMVC Project Team successfully organized a comprehensive training program for approximately 40 farmers in Chegu, located in the Mion District. The training aimed to equip participants with practical knowledge and skills to improve maize productivity, promote environmental sustainability, and enhance income-generating opportunities within the maize value chain.

The training covered several critical areas, including:

  • Climate-Smart Agricultural Practices
  • Biodiversity Conservation and Sustainable Land Management
  • Soil Health and Organic Farming Techniques
  • Access to Finance and Investment Readiness
  • Market Access and Agribusiness Opportunities

The sessions were facilitated by experienced Agricultural Extension Officers alongside representatives from Opportunity Bank, who provided valuable insights into agricultural financing, business planning, and investment opportunities available to farmers and agribusiness actors.

Advancing Practical Learning Through Climate-Smart Demonstration Farms

As part of the field engagement, the ESMVC Project Team visited a newly established drip irrigation and water-efficient farming demonstration site in Chegu. The demonstration farm will serve as a practical learning center where farmers can receive hands-on training on modern maize production techniques, efficient water management, and sustainable farming practices.

A key feature of the demonstration site is its solar-powered borehole irrigation system, which provides a reliable and environmentally friendly source of water for crop production. By harnessing renewable energy to power irrigation, the project is showcasing innovative climate-smart solutions that help farmers reduce production costs, improve water efficiency, and strengthen resilience against climate variability.

The demonstration site is expected to play a vital role in helping farmers increase crop yields, improve resource efficiency, adopt sustainable farming practices, and ultimately enhance profitability while protecting natural resources.

Promoting Inclusive Agricultural Development

The ESMVC Project is committed to fostering inclusive and sustainable agricultural growth across Northern Ghana. The initiative targets approximately 235 farmers and agribusiness actors across Bimbila, Mion, and Gushegu, with a strong focus on empowering women and youth, who remain central to the future of agricultural transformation in the region.

By combining technical training, financial literacy, climate resilience, renewable energy solutions, and market-oriented approaches, the project is creating pathways for smallholder farmers to build sustainable livelihoods while contributing to local food security and economic development.

A Strong Partnership for Sustainable Impact

The ESMVC Project is implemented by Dirsung Company Limited, Agrofredina Company Limited, and Anchor Resource Management and Trading Limited.

The project is implemented in partnership with the Bundesministerium für wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung (BMZ) and is funded by the European Union in Ghana, OACPS Secretariat, GIZ Ghana, and the Agri-Business Facility for Africa.

Through strategic partnerships and community-centered interventions, the ESMVC Project is helping transform the maize value chain into a more resilient, productive, and sustainable sector that benefits farmers, agribusinesses, and rural communities across Northern Ghana.

By investing in farmer training, renewable energy-powered irrigation, climate-smart agriculture, and agribusiness development, the project is creating lasting impact and laying the foundation for stronger agricultural systems, increased incomes, and sustainable rural prosperity for future generations.
