As I sat among over twenty young people at Barcamp Tamale 2025, I could see it in their faces the uncertainty, the hunger to succeed, and the silent question: “Where do I begin?”
I’m Samed Gaida, Founder of Gaida-Com Group from Northern Ghana, and I’ve met hundreds of young people who are talented, passionate, and full of dreams but often lost in the noise of opinions, trends, and pressure. Some are chasing jobs they don’t love, others are following paths they don’t understand, and too many are giving up before they even start.
This is my message to every young person trying to find their way: your career is not just a job it’s your journey toward purpose and self-fulfillment.
1. Don’t Choose a Career to Impress People
One of the biggest mistakes young people make is choosing careers based on what looks good on social media or what others expect of them. A career is not a fashion trend it’s a lifelong investment.
Find what you enjoy doing even when no one is watching. That’s where your passion lives. Whether you’re drawn to media, agriculture, education, or technology do it because it aligns with who you are, not because it pleases others.
2. Mistakes Are Not Failures — They Are Lessons
Many young people fear making mistakes, so they do nothing at all. But here’s the truth: the only real mistake is not trying. I’ve failed many times in my journey but every setback taught me resilience, discipline, and wisdom.
Each “no” you hear today is preparing you for the “yes” that will change your life tomorrow.
3. Discover Yourself Before You Choose Your Career
Before you decide what you want to do, understand who you are. Ask yourself:
- What are my strengths?
- What activities make me lose track of time?
- What kind of impact do I want to make in my community?
Your answers will guide you toward a career that brings not just income, but also meaning.
4. Build Skills — Not Just Certificates
In Northern Ghana, and across the world, employers and clients are looking for skills more than paper qualifications. Whether you’re a student or graduate, learn something practical: communication, digital media, leadership, problem-solving, or entrepreneurship.
That’s how you stay relevant in today’s fast-changing world.
5. Find a Mentor Who Reflects Your Purpose
Success becomes easier when you walk with people who’ve been where you want to go. A mentor helps you avoid costly mistakes and keeps you accountable. Choose one whose story inspires you not just their title.
And remember: even mentors have mentors.
6. Stay Honest, Stay Grounded, Stay Hungry
The world can be competitive, even unfair but your integrity is your greatest asset. Work hard, be consistent, and never compromise your values for shortcuts. Success built on dishonesty doesn’t last.
Be the kind of professional people can trust. Your reputation is worth more than any degree or job title.
My Final Word to the Youth of Northern Ghana
To every young person reading this your background does not define your destiny. I’ve walked this road too, with struggles and sacrifices, but purpose kept me moving.
Start small. Keep learning. Ask for help. Dream boldly but take action daily.
The journey may be tough, but it’s worth it when it leads you to self-fulfillment, independence, and impact.
Remember: the first step to success isn’t having it all figured out it’s deciding to start, right where you are.
